The original Erie tunnel into Jersey City has a fascinating history. Early
commuters and newspaper editorialists often referred to it as the 'Black
Hole of Bergen.' Curious about the 1875 article I looked online and found
what I think was an earlier version of the article quoted -- but a shorter
version -- in the May 15, 1875 *Journal of the Telegraph* -- which I saved
as a jpeg and am attaching to this message. The *Journal of the Telegraph *was
published by the Western Union company.

I think the 800 trains a day figure was a typo. In the *Journal* article it
states as many as 300 trains a day, which sounds about right.
