Ever wonder how the everyday Hoboken station employee managed to keep the
arrivals and departures of two-hundred and sixty plus weekday trains
straight? (It was easier on Sundays with only a hundred thirty-four
trains.) Well, he had some help in the form of a pocket Hoboken Yard
Timetable.

Here, in chronological order, is a synopsis of the trains from Employes
Timetable #22 effective May 25, 1913 that either arrived or departed
Hoboken. The timetable shows train numbers and points of origin or
destination and the tracks that they used as well as times for West End,
Newark, and Secaucus.

It is interesting to note that arriving trains tended to use the higher
numbered tracks and departures the lower numbered. During the rush hours,
all bets were off and trains used any track. It is also important to
remember that prior to the advent of the electric MU cars, every arriving
train either had to back its cars to the storage yard, or else be rescued
by a switcher. This must have made for lively times in the terminal
tower. All arriving locomotives also needed to be turned which meant
another hundred-plus moves to and from the turntable.

Also of note, is that the through trains tend t, whether coming or going,
use tracks 12, 13, 14 with a few exceptions. Milk trains 43, 45 and 47
depart on ten minute headways at 3:30 in the morning; train 43 bearing
passengers and using track 4, and the other two departing from the yard.
At 5:15 PM FOUR trains depart simultaneously for stations along the
Morristown line, which must have made things interesting.
