Dan,

The EL and early CR used Scranton as the area's "large shop" (for items that Hoboken or Croxton couldn't handle), and if the U34CHs
needed work, they'd dead-head them on freights, which is most likely what you saw.

Here's a case-in-point... a Roger Durfee photo of the 3354 in Scranton on January 16, 1976, waiting its turn to get in the shops.
