Hey, Mike. I was hoping you’d be one of the responders. I’m quite certain the article is from a Syracuse based newspaper and it features an image of the ABA sitting at the Magnolia Street engine facilities. Specific personnel are mentioned from EMD and DL&W. Here’s a partial transcription:

“The locomotive left Syracuse at 6 pm with a train bound for Binghamton and today will go to Groveland, NY where it will operate over different terrain from that in this region. Since Sunday am the Diesel had been running between Syracuse and Binghamton. Monday, two units were on the Syracuse-Binghamton line while the third was operating at Utica.”

No other locations are mentioned.

I should be able to scan the article later this week.

Best,

Joshua

I have an undated negative of one of the F3 demonstrators on the DL&W in Syracuse. Did the article say the engines toured the system at all?

My feeling from this one image is that maybe it visited while passing by on the New York Central.

Thanks ....Mike Del Vecchio

Dusting off an old topic to see if there's any new information out there. I'm trying to find the dates a set of F3s ran on the DL&W. I found a newspaper article years ago but the original didn't have a date.

While built as an ABBA set, an ABA set of F3 demonstrators from EMD spent some time on the railroad from Binghamton to Syracuse, Utica, and west of Binghamton to at least Groveland, NY. They were numbered 291 (there was another set with a different number).

Looks like they were built July 1945 and some of the set was sold in late 1946, so it has to be somewhere between those dates.

I think it might be summer 1946 due to an adjacent political article but it sure would be nice to know!

Thanks for any help!

Joshua
