Hi Folks,

Happy July Fourth, everyone! To celebrate, I'm beginning a series of posts
that will include daily EL DS reports from 1972, with comments from myself
and Steve Timko. I will cover System trains, he will cover Divisional
traffic as well as any corrections to my comments; there will be some
overlap. We'll begin with the Youngstown office in September, so you get the
flavor of "normal" operations. Then we'll cover the Agnes period from June
20-July 12 from Y'town and Hoboken offices, and finally finish up with
December. We'll try and get this out daily, although with my crushing
schedule we'll probably miss a day here and there. We hope you enjoy this
trip down Memory Lane!

Here are a few symbols that you should save for future reference:

cod: called on duty

mty: empty

p/u: pick up

s/o: set off

tbc: to be called

jwc: James Grelin, Chief Train Dispatcher (CTD) Y'town

Locations:

HF: Meadville

CD: Cleveland

KE: Kent

BX: buffalo

UK: Salamanca

GN: Marion

PO: Port Jervis

V: Hornell

XN: Shenango (Jct w B&LE)

NE: Niobe

BR: Brier Hill (Y'town)

J: Jamestown

Okay, let's look at Monday, Sept 11, 1972. This report illustrates the
importance of knowing the day of week. Merchandise traffic is generally
lighter Sun-Mon at the beginning of the business week, begins to build on
Tuesday, reaching a crescendo on Friday/Saturday. This is less pronounced on
the Mahoning Div'n, with its 7 day a week mineral traffic, dictated in part
by ore boat arrivals at L Erie ports. This report is shorter than usual
because most of the TOFC hotshots are MIA, as trailers are not loaded
(ramped) on the East Coast on Sunday. From the top:

TC-99 (off the D&H at Bingo) arrives OT at HF, but the new crew reports
engine trouble. Fortunately, SC-99 is AOS, arriving 0900 vs scheduled
arrival 1130, so its power is grabbed for TC-99. In a great example of
constantly evolving daily operations, the TM takes advantage of the
situation by also grabbing some of the easily reached GN's to expedite them
west. These trains don't normally connect at HF. Train departs about an hour
late at 1105.

SC-99 terminates HF and is classified; it's GN and other Marion Div'n cars
will be forwarded by BM-9 that night.

SCX: a long-distance local orig Scranton the previous afternoon (sometimes
orig Croxton, I think). It has a couple of hot cars for Lakeville NY that
must be off the B&O at UK, and will be s/o at Jamestown for p/u by RC
(Rochester)-98 that night. Pat, can you ID these cars and the consignee?

BM-9 out of BX in the early afternoon. Doesn't say whether via River Jct or
B&SW. It will forward the bulk of SC-99's cars out of HF.

Yesterday's PO-87 (long-distance local out of PO on the 10th) terminated at
RA (Elmira) at 1235, where it will be classified. HF cars will be p/u by
that day's SCX.

Today's PO-87 departed PO at 1215.

NE-97: Looks like it will be departing PO OT at 1430. This is the last
remaining New Haven RR WB connection, out of Maybrook at 1015. The PO guys
had 3 hours to blend in cars off the NY Div'n and micro-block for western
points, a truly amazing feat. The listed blocks are: 6 loads, 9 mtys for
Lima, 6 cars for GN, 3 for Huntington (incl N&W), 6 for Hammond, and "oa" 33
cars. No clue what "oa" means; Steve??. Will p/u GN's at Bingo.

Now the EB fleet thru HF in late morning/afternoon:

HF-98: long-distance local, HF-PO, cc at UK, with customary pair of F's.

NY-100: short Sunday edition out of Chicago with rubber interchange off
connections including 1 Boston load (no PB-100 on Sunday) and loads of
power.

TC-100: Carload runthru with D&H/B&M to Boston, departed OT at 1230 with a
pair of C628's and a U33C that will be transferred at CM (western jct with
low-grade Bear Lake line) to the above-mentioned SCX which is having engine
trouble. Not before setting off a shifted load at MS (Corry). These moves
will put it well behind schedule. Blocked B&M/Bingo/B&M/Bingo (likely
includes S&U).

SFE-100: On 9/30 will be renamed NY-98 and begin going via Scranton. Train
appears to be OT, due HF at 1745 where PO's will be added and lead SD45
changed out. Tue-Sat this train picks up Ford-Mahwah hy-cubes at Akron,
produced at the Bedford OH stamping plant and interchanged from PC.

PO-98: following behind with D&H and PO cars and will add both blocks at HF.
The "rescue" D&H 751 off SCX is to be ferried to V by this train.

PN-98: Scranton train with CNJ/RDG traffic, also carries a Gang Mills block.
It's running AOS. Power to be refueled at the racks conveniently located at
the east end of HF and will add to its blocks at HF.

RC-98: Usually operated via the B&SW at this time, with Jamestown Rochester
and Buffalo blocks; the latter two usually included the TOFC connection off
NY-100 (schedule built around that) at HF but not today. Will p/u the two
Lakeville GACX cars at J'town off SCX.

NE-74: TBC at GN later, along with Divisional trains.
