Hi Ken,

I never observed the operation, but from other accounts that I have read and employee timetables, it appears they shoved up the High Line between the Archways and Bergen Junction. See the attached excerpts from the April 28 1963 NY Division ETT. Page 91 describes the backup move rules regarding use of the backup hose. Pages 86 and 88 show the time schedules. Times are shown for Croxton and Bergen Jct. - looks to be 6 minutes.

A couple of questions on the "old loop/new loop" article and map:

First, how did Northern Branch trains accomplish the shove move to get into Hoboken Terminal? It seems from the map that this could be most easily accomplished by running forward onto the lead to the Bergen Archway, then shoving back onto the Greenwood Lake Lead and the Third Track to the 1955 Ramp, and then moving forward via the 1955 Ramp and Boonton Line/M&E into Hoboken. If this is not how it were done, a corrected description of the operation is of great interest to me.

Second, how much additional time did it take to accomplish this backup move?

Third, was there any other track construction completed to allow Northern Branch trains to avoid this backup move? If not, were any contemplated? Or was the hope of discontinuing Northern Branch commuter operations already being planned when Northern Branch trains were moved to the Hoboken Terminal?

Fourth, did the time needed for the backup move lengthen the schedule sufficiently long enough to discourage ridership, thus leading to the end of all passenger service on the Branch?

Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the positive comments on the Croxton approach
map. Actually, in looking at it with fresh eyes (and some help from Rich
Tubbs via Facebook), I realized that I placed West End Tower on the
wrong side of the tracks, and that I had the A Yard "Boxcar" office on
the east side of the PRR / PC North East Corridor Line bridge; it was
actually just west of the Turnpike and PRR / PC bridges, near County
Road. So here is a slightly better version with those tweeks. Jim Gerofsky
