Best evidence we can find says that those cars were brown with black heralds.
The photos show the side boards of a gondola of the same era holding up the first floor of a house near the old East Dover Car Shops. The house was built in 1908 by a local carpenter who bought lumber from the DL&W.
If that house is ever torn down it would be nice to save a section of the boards. That's Verizon technician Lloyd Leone shining a light on the herald. After arranging for a visit to the house through official channels so I can document the find, the house it turns out is owned by one of my high school English teachers. She's never seen that part of the basement.
This may be the only look we'll get of the colors of the pre-WWI Lackawanna.

Thanks to Paul T's excellent work cataloging the Steamtown negatives, I
have a question about DL&W Ice Car 5990.

Were these cars boxcar red? I'm asking as the 'Lackawanna Railroad' herald
seems to stand out making me think they might have been dark green like the
wooden milk cars.
