Note that in this series of photos that the M&E crosses Scotland Street
(today Road) and hugs its curb line all the way to Highland Avenue station.
This elevation project will move the railroad away from Scotland Road,
widen the curve west of Orange station and eliminate one at Highland
Avenue. Note in the map that the M&E and DL&W have been acquiring property
along South Jefferson Street in preparation for the line relocation. In
subsequent projects, properties owned by the Hudson Realty Company reveal
the Lackawanna's interest. We often take the projects for granted and
assume that once the railroad made up its mind to do something, it simply
proceeded. In reality, there were usually years of planning and careful
preparation.

Note also the "No Name Hat Company" on South Jefferson, owned by a fellow
named John B. Stetson. Who remember any of the other Orange Valley hat
companies today?
