Hi Don, hope all is well. There's a bunch of maps related to the Pyne branch here http://www.northernfield.info/moreinfoReport.php?oname=Pyne&lldir=Pyne You are correct with the mining methods (see attached), although if your ever on Jeopardy, the horizontal path left behind by drift mining is called an Adit. If it's open on both sides, then it's a Tunnel. LOL

Also, in addition to it being spelled “Pyne†and it being in what became Taylor, I think identifying A1236-8 using the term “Shaft†is probably better left out, but it might not matter. Frank, correct me if I’m straying here, but I think of a shaft as the vertical connection to the various slopes (coal veins) on which a headframe sits, which basically controls the elevator in the shaft. These pictures depict room and pillar mining within the slopes.

That map is interesting, in that the O&W Capouse/Sibley branch was not yet connected with the LV branch to the Austin breaker, which it wouldn’t until 1910 when it was extended from the Capouse Breaker. I’m pretty sure I remember the Pyne branch lived into the late 1960s when the EL served another business near that site. I think one of the outbuilding still survives.

Located in modern day Taylor Borough, but back in the day it was a patch town alternately called Pyne or Pyneville.
