Subject: Lackawanna Banana Traffic

Pat McKnight was kind enough to send me PDF copies of some DL&W
correspondence from the company files at Steamtown NPS. All are related to
Lackawanna's banana traffic. Pat said I was welcome to share them.

One file I found very interesting consisted of a letter sent in September
1950 from the Buffalo Division Supt. J. A. Craddock to Lackawanna President
William White. The subject was complaints by consignees at Lackawanna's
Clinton Street Team Track. This facility was located on Buffalo's east side
near Bailey Avenue. A Lackawanna Industries and Facilities Directory issued
in 1952 described Clinton Street as a 10-car public team track. The
complaints had to do with the poor condition of the roadway within the
facility, a roadway used by "banana receivers," who sent trucks to pick up
bananas. One customer, the Joseph Sansone Company, was requiring Lackawanna
begin delivering the cars to the nearby Niagara Frontier Food Terminal, a
joint Nickel Plate-Erie facility. Supt. Craddock noted DL&W was responsible
for the extra switching charge and he feared other consignees would follow
suit.

In his letter to William White, Craddock was recommending resurfacing the
roadway and loading areas. I was intrigued that a division superintendent
apparently needed the approval of the company president for this kind of
work.
