My 94-year-old neighbor invited me to see the Gauge-1 live-steam Erie Mikado
he just finished building. This was an Accucraft kit designed originally by
Astor. An NYC tender was the closest he could find to an Erie configuration.
There are necessary compromises here, but considering my friend's age, the
limits of item availability in the Gauge 1 world, and retirement budgets --
this is such a wonderful accomplishment to view. Hundreds of parts, hundreds
of screws, and almost one hundred hours were needed for assembly.

Models in this realm have an air of realism and mass that the smaller scales
cannot equal. Picture this engine all fired up, chugging along with
realistic sound under 60 pounds of steam pressure, and pulling fifty freight
cars around 22-feet radius curves on a nearby outdoor track in someone's
huge backyard. It's whole different and wonderful approach to model
railroading than we indoor modelers know.
