Subject: DL&W Oil Houses?
"bj-oil_house.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1000x750 (24bit)

I'm trying to find other examples of 'oil houses' along the DL&W. The
picture I'm attaching here is the 'bunker' found at Branchville Junction
(3 miles north of Newton, NJ on the Lackawanna Sussex Branch.) From the
newspaper information of the area, I can only surmise that it was built
in 1905 as quite a lot of 'fixup' was done on the Sussex Branch in 1905.

My val maps label the structure as 'oil house' plus I've been unable to
actually define its function. An oil house is typically used to house
kerosene or oil and they are usually stone or concrete to contain the
explosion, right? But there is mention of this one housing (possibly) a
gasoline powered pump or a gasoline pump.

Anyway, in my searching around of photos, I have yet to find a similar
example of one of these on the DL&W (or anywhere for that matter.)

Thanks,
Dave Rutan
