Hi folks,

I got the October 1942 issue of Railroad Magazine off eBay. It features an article called "Erie Centipedes" by Andrew Goorick, and it's about his experiences firing the 5014 (a.k.a. the Matt H. Shay). It's in surprisingly good condition for an old pulp paper magazine, but we know that won't last, so I decided it would be prudent to scan the article in for preservation.

I've attached the article here for everyone to enjoy - the copyright has long since passed, so there are no problems there.

I actually learned quite a bit here - the giant firebox and cranky stoker made it hard to keep the boiler at operating pressure. Early on they wouldn't operate any other trains across Starrucca if a Triplex was running over it for fear of having too much weight loading the bridge deck (!!!). And I didn't know that the 5015 and 5016 incorporated a number of changes to improve on the 5014's design (I thought they were all identical). It's a wonderful first-hand story from over 100 years ago.... Enjoy!

- Paul
