List,

I was always curious as to what use the DL&W tanks cars were put to. I have a photo from Rail Data Services showing car # 95958 in a revenue train. There are no markings that can be made out and even the complete number is not visible.

However, there is a newspaper clipping I've had in my files many years which a friend had sent me. It shows a DL&W tank car in a wreck train at Waverly on Jan 27, 1961. You can only make out about 20% of the car, but the DL&W 95__ is visisble. See the attached photos. Also in the photo is one of the DL&W's steam wreckers.

Other railroads sometimes carried a tank car in their wreck trains to provide water for their steam wreckers (and I suppose steam locomotives) and for fire-fighting purposes. This is the only instance where I've seen a tank car in an Erie or DL&W wreck train. As far as I know, both roads used old steam locomotive tenders for their steam wreckers and fire-fighting.

So, does anyone know why this DL&W tank car is in the wreck train?
