Subject: Question about DL&W Bergen Jct in 1900

The one question I have remaining refers to a statement made in a short
article (I'm attaching) from the Feb.19, 1910 issue of RAILWAY &
ENGINEERING REVIEW, written just after the grade crossing elimination had
been completed and the new M&E and Boonton bridges were installed. In the
fourth paragraph the article states the new M&E bridge has three tracks and
the Boonton bridge four. So I guess the expansion of the right-of-way from
two tracks to three (M&E) and four (Boonton) dates from the completion of
this project.

By the way, I also wanted to add, Bob Bahrs raised a question about the
West End towers. There was an article in RAILROAD AGE GAZETTE that
explained the reason for building a temporary tower. The article was in the
February 12, 1909 issue, just before the project began in earnest. GAZETTE
explains that Lackawanna was converting the interlocking from the old
mechanical plant to an electro-pneumatic installation and housing it in a
temporary tower. The article states the temporary tower would be replaced
when the project was completed. I am attaching this article, too. The
article describes the new installation and states it will be expanded once
work is completed.

You can see the original tower in a photo Bob sent to the list January 27th
that shows the junction before the work started. You can see the temporary
tower in a photo that appeared in RAILWAY & ENGINEERING REVIEW, a photo
that was taken while the work was underway. (It shows a steam shovel
excavating the NYS&W right-of-way.) I took the liberty of cropping the
photo Bob sent to make the tower stand out more and am attaching both
images.

Again, a thank you to Bob and everyone who contributed to answering my
original questions. This was great!
