Subject: Question about DL&W Bergen Jct in 1900

I also want to extend many thanks to all who have contributed to this,
especially Bob, Mark and Roger. Fascinating history.

I am attaching two images that for some reason are not included in the
RAILWAY AND ENGINEERING REVIEW article on Jon Liles' site. These are Figs
10 and 11 on page 165. Link below to a copy I found through Google Books:

https://books.google.com/books?id=4A1CAQAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=editions:WAI3Byka96EC&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiW_9fhs6nnAhXQhHIEHcafAzUQ6AEwBXoECAYQAg#v=onepage&q&f=false

I was very interested to see them. It had been mentioned in the ENGINEERING
RECORD article Mark linked, that DL&W had erected temporary trestles for
the Boonton and M&E lines so the excavation and the building of the
permanent bridges could proceed. Fig 10 in the RAILWAY AND ENGINEERING
REVIEW article shows the temporary M&E trestle with the permanent structure
in the background. Fig 11 is interesting as it shows the concrete
foundation being put in for the new West End tower.

The photo Bob Bahrs sent of the preexisting junction was astounding. What a
crazy looking crossing. Now I understand why Lackawanna's William Truesdale
called it possibly the most dangerous crossing in the U.S. Wonder what it
was like working the old West End tower? There is a photo of the old wood
tower in Fig 9 also on p165 of the RAILWAY AND ENGINEERING REVIEW article
which I am attaching. Of course we know, thanks to Bill Sheppard, the new
West End had some headaches too.

From my own experience, I never saw too much moving on the NYSW tracks when
riding GL-Boonton or M&E trains back in the EL days. But later on, after
Conrail took over, I noticed the line becoming much busier. Especially
after CR closed the Waldo connection to the former PRR and Kearny yard and
began using what had been the old EL route from Marion Jct.
