Schuyler,

The EL and BCK "XF" cars were also used for grain and bulk feed shipments to
such customers as Agway. The cars would frequently have the doors or
remnants left in them. If their next load was to be bagged flour, the cars
would be sent to the BCK/EL cleanout tracks near the City Ship Canal. Here
the debris would be removed, along with protruding nails, and they would get
a quick sweeping and perhaps a cold wash. Cars in worse shape would be
repaired and maybe blown out with compressed air.

Those infested would be set aside and when a number were collected, an
exterminator brought in to gas them.

To unload the car at the customer, one grain door would be removed/torn out
and the car emptied. The other grain door would be left in place. If the
car's next load was again to be bulk grain/feed, then they already had one
door in place.

Attached is a photo of BCK and EL "XF" cars at the bulk feed loading station
in Buffalo. The BCK car clearly shows the grain door.
