A few other odds and ends about trains 3 & 4:

Prior to the discontinuance of Train 2, it seems that #3 ran via the Buffalo Division and the River Line, where it did not have the same restrictions about running in advance of stated times - relevant ETT pages from October 30, 1966 attached.

#s 3 and 4 were permitted to run at passenger train speeds, except when carrying freight equipment. Also, these trains carried the modified Stillwell coach on the rear as a Rider Car.

Thanks Vinnie, this is most helpful. #3 could not depart in advance of schedule between Hornell and CB as this was TT-TO territory governed by Rule 261. It appears that #4 had the same restriction over the entire former Allegheny Div’n. Steve Timko posted a more detailed explanation of Rule 261 a few years ago.

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately, I donÃâ‚â„t find a plethora of photographs of trains 3 and 4 in the book. I guess they werenÃâ‚â„t an oft pair. I spotted three: #4 at Youngstown on My 30, 1967, on the bottom of page 50, #3 16 Waverly in July 1967 on the top of page 60, and #3 at Youngstown on February 18, 1968, on the bottom of page 66. The last one has a clear view of the consist, taken from the rear facing forward. I donÃâ‚â„t see any REA containers. In the first two photos, I really canÃâ‚â„t tell.

Steve TimkoÃâ‚â„s Ãâ‚Å“Trackside Around Youngstown 1962-1982 with Dave McKay also has a shot of the last #3 at Youngstown on February 18, 1968, on the top of page 29 - strictly a head end view.

I donÃâ‚â„t hare any eastern region timetables from 1967. The April 24, 1966, NY & Scranton Divisions ETT shows #3 departing Hoboken at 12:15am and #4 arriving Hoboken at 9:50pm, with the note that Ãâ‚Å“Mo. 4 may depart any station in advance of time if all traffic has been delivered and received.Ãâ‚ The October 29, 1967, Susquehanna, Buffalo, Mahonig, and Marion Divisions ETT shows #4 departing Chicago at 9:15pm and #3 arriving Chicago at 2:00am. Both trains carry the notes about departing stations ahead of time on the Marion and Susquehanna division. The Mahonig division restricted #3 to departing any station west of CB Junction in advance, and #4 to departing any station west of Salamanca in advance. IÃâ‚â„ve scanned the relevant ETT pages and have attached them here.

Vinnie
