Re: (erielack) Steamtown Images--September 20, 2013 (C3336 thru C3340)

Great photographs. That is indeed the Erie's Jessup Yard in C3339. The
location can also be verified by visiting Frank Adams' Pennsylvania's Northern
Anthracite Coal Field website at http://www.northernfield.info/

Go to Report by Operation Name, click on P and scroll down to Pompey. Click
on More Info and then Erie Yard 1940. The sketch will show the location of
the yard and other items of interest.

The other operation farther up the Winton was known as Pierce. A search on
the Pierce More Info link will show a shot of the breaker and numerous DL&W
hoppers at the operation.

When DL&W abandoned the Winton Branch in 1953, Pompey was the last
remaining customer on the branch. DL&W continued to service Pompey via rights over
NYO&W. In 1953, some 65,000 tons of coal were shipped via rail with an
additional 16,000 tons shipped in 1954.

Pompey ceased operations in July 1968, but coal was prepared at the Wadell
Washery in Winton (Jessup) into 1969. A color photograph in the Lackawanna &
Wyoming Valley RHS 2012 calendar shows an EL coal train on NYO&W tracks in
Dickson City headed towards Scranton. It's possible that Pompey coal was
being hauled on that run.

For more information on the Winton, Frank's Rails Between Dunmore and
Jessup: The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western's Winton Branch is a very interesting
read. Until the arrival of the book, the Winton was pretty much a footnote
in DL&W history.
