As one of the many planned events to celebrate its 50th Anniversary year, Tri-State is sending its Lackawanna steel caboose 896 to participate in the URHS open house in Boonton to join the Lackawanna heritage unit. This will be the first time a heritage unit was matched with an authentic namesake caboose. Today the Morristown & Erie brought the 896 to Denville where the NS local H-02 picked it up to bring to Dover Yard, shown in these photos, all but one from my cell phone.

The Lackawanna 1074 is currently at Allentown, its official status "unassigned." Tomorrow NS will have an extra crew bring the unit to Washington where it will meet up with the H-02 from Dover. The H-02 will bring it to Lake Junction where NJTransit officials will measure and inspect it. After that, H-02 will bring 1074 to Dover to join the Lackawanna caboose. Follow the progress of 1074 by checking www.heritageunits.com, a remarkable site that tracks all heritage units.

Thursday is for the railfans. The H-02 will bring the caboose and 1074 on its routine trip to do the Boonton Line work, and expect some uncoupled stops as the crew goes about its work. Listen on the scanner at 161.400. At the end of the day, the crew will tie up at Boonton Yard, position the 1074, caboose and NS unit for display. Monday, the H-02 will taxi to Boonton and start their day, leaving the caboose somewhere for the M&E to pick up, could be Dover or Denville or D&R, etc.

The chase up the Lackawanna's "Old Road" should be great tomorrow. With a 10 mph track speed photographing this move should be like fish in a barrel. We don't yet know a call time for the Allentown crew, but the start time in Dover is 7:00 a.m. H-02 will grab its cars from East Dover and Lake Junction then head west. It could in Washington before noon if all goes well.

The NS crew knows that it is welcome to take the Lackawanna caboose with them to Washington. There are issues with that, such as the extra moves required to run around it, and responsibility issues with it leaving NJT and M&E territory. It is likely that the crew will opt to leave it in Dover. Please don't question their decision.

So, everyone, have fun with it. There's a Lackawanna caboose on the loose on home rails, and a great visit from a celebrity for the rest of the week. Let's enjoy, and post photos of the events as they develop. One request, please resist the temptation to invade Dover Yard. It's an NJT sign up location so there is no available parking except in the wee hours, and NJT isn't equipped to grant releases there. NJT is very generous to allow NS to keep that caboose and Heritage unit there. NS is obviously very generous, and I can't thank my employer Morristown & Erie and its train crews enough for the extra moves it has made to make the caboose part of the show. Those moves included putting 896 into the shop in Morristown during the weekend to keep vandals away from it.

Congrats to the URHS for planning and putting together what promises to be a great event, and to Tri-State on the beginning of its 50th Anniversary year.

                 ....Mike Del Vecchio
