Adding a little info here: In late 1971, UPS added nine states including AR,
KS, LA, MS, NE, OK, TX and the Dakotas. Trailers for these destinations
brought to Chicago by EL from the East Coast were mostly highwayed; rubber
interchange to ATSF for Topeka and Ok City, to IC for Jackson MS,
steel-wheel to MoPac for TX. The three-states expansion of 1973 brought in
CO, NM and WY (I'm guessing Denver was rubbered to BN), and the 1975
expansion brought in the rest of the lower 48. With the addition of LA,
Richmond and Las Vegas trailers via ATSF, all ATSF-served points went to
steel-wheel in 8/75. UPS did enjoy relative labor peace except at
Philadelphia, where repeated job actions in the late 1960's caused UPS to
suspend service to that market for a number of years.

In the very early 1970's, UPS had most of the eastern portion of the US,
basically up to the Mississippi River. UPS also had California, Oregon and
Washington on the west coast. Packages from the east to the west and vise
versa could only go by air at that time (Blue Label service). As the 1970's
progressed UPS gradually got rights all across the US by land eventually
covering all of the continental US.
