Re: (erielack) REA Express

This is one of the hallmarks of a great company: the ability to adapt to a
changing marketplace. Until the 1950's, UPS operated within ICC-designated
"city commercial zones", a business model that was built around shoppers
taking public transit to buy merchandise at downtown department stores,
which was then delivered by UPS. This model was made obsolete by suburban
shopping malls and the family car, prompting UPS to begin acquiring
common-carrier rights and going after REA and parcel post. For further
details, see my "Brief History of UPS" in The Diamond 21:2.

I remember when, in the '40's, my mother ordered items from bambergers and
Meyer Bros. which were delivered to our home in Ridgewood by UPS.

Not entirely accurate. UPS was started by James Casey in 1907 as a
messenger and package delivery service. Within a few years they
expanded into package delivery for retail stores and focused on that
until the common carrier operations grew and replaced the retail
delivery side of the business. They were never owned by the stores
but until recent years were privately owned.
