In the US we used the term RAILROAD. In England they used the term
RAILWAY. Back in the mid to late 1800's when American railroads were
looking for overseas investors (predominantly in England), they
sometimes used RAILWAY in their name. By using a familiar term, they
thought, an English investor would feel more comfortable and be more
likely to invest.
