Erie-Lackawanna Railroad played important role locally

Fifty years ago, on Oct. 17, 1960, two of the area's largest employers became one, as the Erie Railroad and its rival, the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, merged to become the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad after years of negotiations and study. In reality, the EL was not truly a merger, as the larger Erie Railroad was the surviving company and former Erie management controlled the new company for its first three years.
