There was an "Overnite" trucking out of Richmond, VA that a couple of
years ago was purchased by UPS and is now operated as UPS Freight. Is this the
same company? At any rate, it would seem that UPS continues to be committed
to over the road operations, though this latter purchase was probably more
to capture a part of the general freight business as more trucking
companies seem to be consolidating.

One and the same.
A few years ago the big LTL trucking companies were: CF, Yellow, Roadway,
ABF, Carolina, and Overnite. All except Overnite were union (teamsters).
CF went south a few years ago, ABF bought Carolina, Yellow and Roadway
"merged", and then again, and is now just Yellow, and in trouble. And O'nite
went to UP, was spun off, then bought by UPS for their truckload expansion,
and the name disappeared. O'nite went through a big teamster organizing fight
for a few years and beat them; do not know what the status of the former
O'nite-now- UPS people is, regarding teamster-izing.
These outfits shipped a lot of TOFC, but as mentioned, all the rail shipped
LTL tended to be overflow, weekend traffic and largely used railroad owned
trailers especially here in the east, and especially as manufacturing
declined here in the east--no backhaul. Saved them repositioning fees. Under
the teamster agreements, the LTL companies were permitted to ship up to 28%
of their traffic by rail, but apparently never came close to that--
