Oops, I misspelled it, it is indeed "Overnite" Transportation, acquired by
UP in 1986, sold in 2004, and acquired by UPS in 2005. As you say, now
operated as "UPS Freight". Both UPS and FedEx wanted to extend their product
offerings into LTL. At around the same time, FedEx acquired American
Trucking which it now operates as FedEx Freight. Will they expand into TL as
well? Anything's possible, although it's a very different business. There's
the joke about them merging into "Fed-UPS". It appears that UPS has, in
recent years, reduced the proportion of parcel business handled by TOFC due
to the need to match service times of FedEx, which has never used rail.
IIRC, a few years ago UPS shortened NY-Chicago service from third day to
second, which meant shifting trucks to all-highway.

Paul:
You mention "Overnight" as the trucking company purchased, and later sold,
by UP:
"A strategic rail-truck acquisition that actually occurred (but in reverse)
was
the post-regulation purchase of Overnight by UP. I believe the idea here was
for UP to provide transcontinental single-carrier service by trucking from
Chicago, St Louis and Memphis. In other words, bypass eastern RR's entirely.
For whatever reason, this didn't happen as planned, and UP eventually sold
Overnight."
There was an "Overnite" trucking out of Richmond, VA that a couple of years
ago was purchased by UPS and is now operated as UPS Freight. Is this the
same company? At any rate, it would seem that UPS continues to be committed
to over the road operations, though this latter purchase was probably more
to capture a part of the general freight business as more trucking companies
seem to be consolidating.
