The Nicholson Heritage Association is raising funds to purchase and
renovate the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad's Nicholson
Station. The historic landmark, which has remained virtually unchanged for more
than 160 years, will be turned into a museum focusing on Nicholson and its
influences.
"By preserving one of Nicholson's remarkable historic buildings, the
Heritage Association will foster pride within our small town," said Marion
Sweet, association chairwoman.
The station, the association notes, has historical significance to all of
Northeast Pennsylvania. In May 1878, the first telephone service in the
area connected the Nicholson station to the DL&W Scranton station, about 21
miles south. In 1855, the local U.S. post office moved from the edge of the
settlement to the Nicholson station. With the completion of the Clarks
Summit-Hallstead Cut-off, also referred to as the Nicholson Cut-off, in 1915,
passenger service started from the new brick and concrete station next to the
just completed Nicholson Bridge, or Tunkhannock Viaduct. After 1915, the
station handled all freight, including after the merger of the DL&W with the
Erie Railroad to become the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Due to financial
hardship, the EL permanently closed the station in 1971.

Donations may be mailed to the association at P.O. Box 496, Nicholson, PA
18446.
