Re: (erielack) Re: Moving

To my knowledge (and some study of the subject), Sears ended catalog home production at the end of the 1920s. We purchased one in Villa Rica, GA in the late 70s. It was delivered in a box car and flat car. The Southern main was just across the street and they were unloaded there. The house was purchased and "assembled" by the Candler family of Coca Cola fame (he was one of the original partners) and we were the first outside the family to own it. I know there are examples of Sears Catalog homes in north NJ and wonder if they came by train (Erie or DLW - list content).

Paul,

I didn't know they were still making & selling those houses into the 70s. I thought it ended in the 1930s.

Does it count as a "move" that my wife's uncle ordered a JCPenney catalog home and had it delivered in a 50' boxcar to the Dover freighthouse in the mid-1970s? :)
