I noted Paul's "how many  Matthew Shay's could there be", found 4 in the
Ancestry.com index of the  1900 census. 

Matthew H(Henderson) Shay, born 1843 is noted as a "Loco  engineer" in the
1880 Census, and as RR engineer in 1900. Apparently his  adopted son
(stepson??) Harry had a son Matthew H, born 1897, who is later  listed as a
Civil Engineer working for a RR, also at Youngstown,  OH.
