I noted Paul's "how many Matthew Shay's could there be", found 4 in the
Ancestry.com index of the 1900 census.
Matthew H(Henderson) Shay, born 1843 is noted as a "Loco engineer" in the
1880 Census, and as RR engineer in 1900. Apparently his adopted son
(stepson??) Harry had a son Matthew H, born 1897, who is later listed as a
Civil Engineer working for a RR, also at Youngstown, OH.
Attached is a photo of Matthew H.
