Re: (erielack) Fire Damaged Cars

I think after the merger (although this is pretty early into it) the
Budd diners started to be used interchangeably with the Erie modernized
diners across trains. The accident report might give car numbers or a
local Ohio paper would likely have more details and photos. If it was a
Budd diner, it did eventually get returned to service since both 769,
770 operated to the end of passenger service.

Rereading the press report, this train appears to have been #5 "The Lake Cities". I don't think this train usually had one of the Budd Diners on it. I'm wondering if one of the heavyweight diners was in the wreck. The wreck sounds like it could have been the worst passenger train accident in the life of EL. It must have been pretty violent, happening at speed to throw an individual through a window while injuring another 80 people. Apparently the head end power survived the crash because none of the E's or PA's were retired at that time. I assume the trucker was at fault in this accident.

Thanks for this information. I believe most of the Erie rebuilt diners used gas. One of the parlor-diners was listed as using charcoal. I suspect the Budd Kitchen-Diners were all gas. One thing that is not clear: Did EL restore the Diner to service after the wreck? There seems to be a question as to whether it was scrapped or not. There was a picture of the "Hospital Extra" in Trains in the mid-60s showing a GP7 pulling a mix of passenger equipment including some MU power and trailer cars bound for Meadville - I believe. However, the MU's were restored to service as far as I can tell. One of the DL&W 300 series coaches burned and that was scrapped. There is a listing of all of this in an old "BLOCK LINE".
