As I remember a GE miniature lamp catalogue from  about 50 years ago, GE
produced special lamps for railroad signal service  I founds this web site:
http://translight-tlc.com/index.asp which seems to have the most info on
them.

The lamps have bayonet bases, extra heavy filaments with  rough service
supports

Another GE page mentions that GE appears to have LEDs to replace the
incandescents
