Sorry for the empty post--A little jittery cold here in Helena--(mostly
clear skies, -2F, 20 mph wind to bring wind chill down.) If it warms up I
might be able to catch a photo of MRL 332, former EL 3657 (?#) sitting NE of
Helena (in the yard). Internally it has been upgraded to an SD45-2 now. It
is the trial unit for the Hotstart Auxiliary Power Units that MRL is
considering putting in fleet-wide to reduce fuel and emissions. Effectively, the
EMD 645 shuts down (and its fuel guzzling 6-gallons per hour at idle) and
the Hotstart APU (powered by a Yamar diesel at an estimated 0.45 gph) starts
to keep the engine water and oil warm, and the batteries charged. Unlike
some of the SWs and GP9s, there is plenty of room in the hood for the APUs.
I suspect either tonight or tomorrow night they should have a good
demonstration of how it starts at -14 or the predicted -18F on Monday night.
