(erielack) NJ TRANSIT

Well, during my brief visit to NJ I took a trip to Hoboken to do some photography of the city. Hoboken has kind of turned itself into a "movie-set" type of city. It has retained a 1920s type style with its row houses. I could imagine Ralph Kramden living on Willow Ave rather than Brooklyn - except in today's economy he could probably not afford it.

Riding NJT in, I noticed that the MOW DEPT is re-tieing the line. I'm wondering if this is the first time the ties have been replaced since EL rebuilt the line in the summer of 1963? That's kind of a trivia question for everyone. Another question is this one: Once on the DL&W Montclair Branch I noticed one station that has been closed - "AMPERE". I did know the answer to this station's name but forgot it. The stop was named after a factory making electrical equipment. Was it Westinghouse? Now all that is at that location is an abandoned platform and an aluminum building/control point identified as "AMPERE". It's interesting to look at how DL&W shaped platforms and bridges along this line. There was obviously a lot of freight handled on this line at one time. I think there was even a siding at Roseville Ave, deep in the cut.

Leaving Hoboken I was looking across the meadows at the old Greenwood Lake line. It looks like somebody is storing a lot of hoppers and grain cars on the track. It almost looked like EL was heading a freight out of Croxton wating for "GA" to close.

Hoboken Terminal is looking great. I was wondering if NJT has ever considered leasing out the Lunch Room and Resturaunt? These were very popular places into the 60s with many Wall Streeters taking the ferry to Hoboken for their lunch. I'm told they had a great menu run by DL&W's Dining Car DEPT. Wouldn't it be great to revive the old menus and recipes and enjoy that experience again? It might work!

I came home on NJT's 247/1029. When changing Trains at Montclair State I noticed something I had never seen before. To F40s running "elephant style". I don't see too many NJT operations, but this was the first time I ever saw them MU locomotives. 1029 had either six or eight coaches.
