RE: (erielack) EL calendar photos for July

Right on Paul!

I remember in 1967 as a child of 12 riding the Lake Cities to Chicago with my parents and sister and coming into Dearborn Station. Waiting to board the Texas Chief to Temple, Texas and visit my other sister. The ride on the EL was awesome. The dining car, menus and maroon colored upholstered seats will stay etched in my memory forever. I remember ordering a tuna sandwich on toast for lunch with neopolitan ice cream for desert. I had to have my dad help me fill out the the menu and hand it to the waiter. I also remember when it was mealtime a porter or kitchen person walked through the cars playing a tune on a xylophone(?) to alert passengers it was time to eat. I know other members rode more than I did so they may be able to add more to this. I really enjoyed the ride back in the early morning through the Poconos.....

> The ELHS/ELDCPS calendar features one of my favorite shots in the calendar this year (apparently, a real favorite, since Mike Schafer also used it in the newest Diamond! :) - A pair of EL E8s departing Chicago with the Lake Cities, passing an inbound set of Santa Fe F7s. Two ultra-classy paint scheme in one shot! How can it get any better??? :) A lot of neat details in the photo - the dwarf signals, the wooden walkway across the tracks, and heavily expansion-braced trackage. And the E8s are very clean!

> The Weekend Chief calendar shows a former DL&W GE 44-ton diesel (note its steam-era headlight visor), now wearing EL black/yellow paint at the 149th St. yard in the Bronx. The pair of 40' boxcars add to the "shortline feel" of the shot, and the grimy ground and industrial clutter really give you a gritty, city feel The overhead crane is another neat detail in this nifty shot.
