Re: (erielack) ore trains

The system that used the automobile wheels to open the bottom-dump mechanism
was developed by Erie Mining Co's RR (List content?), a road jointly owned
by BSC and YS&T, among others. It hauled taconite pellets from Hoyt Lakes to
Taconite Harbor, MN. I'm not aware that this particular automated system was
used on other roads in the iron range. The system permitted 100 car tac
trains to move through the unloading facility at 10 mph, discharging the
entire train in less than 7 minutes, and permitting trains to make up to 3
round trips a day for a total daily car mileage of 450.

The Great Lakes boats are also called "Lakers".

Additional information: Some of the iron ore roads used an automatic
unloading device, such as a tire mounted on a wheel that automatically
opened
the Jennie doors when the tire rotated from running on a bar or ledge as
the
cars entered the dock area.

Correction: Ships are called "boats" on the Great Lakes.
