Re: (erielack) "Short-term" operations

Don't forget that many operations using large numbers of cars on a daily
basis have their own in-plant switcher(s) (sometimes it's a hi-rail vehicle
with coupler). The RR comes once or twice daily to bring and take away
whatever cars had accumulated. The cars sit on a siding or perhaps in a
small yard, and the plant switcher drills them in and out of the plant as
needed. I don't know if Drew had its own switcher.

How were "same day switchouts' handled? If a car was dropped at a
consignee, it usually stayed there until a future day's drill picked it
up (by which point, the car would have been loaded or unloaded).

For the most part, service was provided once a day, maximum.

Some industries, such as Sharon Steel dumped ore on daylight only, so the
ore cars put in on third trick would be empty and pulled outbound on second
trick. Same with boxcars of copper (bars) for Packard Electric at North
Warren,
they would get more than one switch a day, due to volume of inbound cars.

There probably weren't more than a couple of industries on each division
that this applied to. Perhaps others can add some to the list.

One exception, of course, was the captive Hot Metal crews working from
Youngstown to Hubbard, Warren and Sharpsville. Those crews returned with
the
bottles when empty or the bottles brought over by the previous crew.
