The lesson?  If you build your own railroad, be sure you give you an estimate. That way, if you pay too much to you, you can sue you for damages.  Of course, you should stick to your original plan when ypou have you do the work, and then you should carefully audit any bill you submit to you to confirm that you are not paying you too much -- before you pay you.

Presumably, Mercer was satisfied with the product and the billing when he paid Taylor.  What happened?  Buyer's remorse?
