Remember also that there was very serious proposal in the late 1920s-early 30s to build a reservoir that would have flooded the valley of the S. Branch of the Raritan from approximately Lockwood Gorge all the way up through Long Valley and east of Flanders. This would have submerged the CNJ High Bridge Branch along with most of the Chester Branch. I think the Depression and local opposition quashed it, but I wonder if the possibility of this construction could hve been a factor in the abandonment? This was a huge local controversy in the day that is largely forgotten. There is a map from a contemporary newspaper in the locally-produced book History of Middle Valley, NJ that shows the footprint of the proposed reservoir. I'll see if I can scan it and post...
