Re: (erielack) Time to turn those calendars....Feb 2009, Pocono Summit

The concrete poles at Pocono Summit were always an easy spotting feature to
ID that location. I was of the impression that it was the only station
location on the Lackawanna that had them. I was recently told that Chatham also
has them. I had always known about Pocono Summit, but had forgotten about
the one right here in my own back yard. I would guess that they were around at
both locations at the time of the merger. Chatham probably still has them?
I'm sure one of are many N Jersey members can confirm that. I remember
finding one west of the station at P S years ago. Also correcting a previous
post, only one of the steam engines in the photo is considered a Pocono. The
4-8-4s were the only engines given that nick name. Also, there appears to be a
unexplained set of color light signals on the opposite side of the signal
bridge in addition to the obvious semaphores which are very much in service.
Maybe that set is not in service yet? Maybe the old coach and additional car
are for the signal gang? A track diagram from 1927 shows only semaphores
here. A diagram dated May of 1940 show only the one color light block signal,
number 1026 as the only signal on this structure. It notes several semaphores
just west of the tower as still being in service. From that I would guess
this photo is dated just prior to 1940.

Speaking of concrete. I've seen the pictures of the concrete utility wire
poles before in this area. I know DL&W did a lot of experimenting with
reinforced concrete. Did DL&W make much use of idea? How long did these concrete
poles last? Were they around at the time of the EL merger?
