The "conventional wisdom" at the time was to draw the firewall around the Northeast, with its redundant line density and commuters. But just for fun, imagine an AT&SF/EL/D&H merger with almost no interchange traffic from other nearby railroads -- and when the ICC ordered gateways to remain open, lots of cars getting lost . . .
