Tying in somewhat to the discussion of EL 50000-50019, I noticed while looking at the Erie 1941 freight schedule (available from ELHS) notations referring to "icing stations" at Marion and Hornell. These were the two mainline points at which reefers on sections of train 98 and others were re-iced enroute. There were also major icing facilities at Chicago-51St, Croxton and Buffalo. In addition, BRC and IHB had icing facilities. IHB in particular provided icing service for most or all Eastern roads (ie not just NYC). At Marion and Hornell, a minimum of one hour was allotted for re-icing. The location of icing stations permitted re-icing at approx 15-hr intervals. Presumably during cold weather, re-icing could be skipped depending upon condiiton of the ice bunkers upon inspection, but in some cases, charcoal heaters might require replenishment to keep produce fom freezing. I know we've previously discussed the handling of livestock, which was generally handled in the same trains. Livestock required feeding and watering at specified intervals (every 24 hr?). I'm wondering if stock pens were located at the same points, and also I'm thinking the stock cars would be set out and and then picked up by a following train, since I doubt that this could be accomplished in an hour or two.
