EL Binghamton TOFC was handled by the Conklin circus ramp. This type of gantry crane was not suitable for TOFC. Also, I'm not aware of any LCL freight in flats or gons handled at Binghamton. This sort of system was developed by NYC and PRR in the 1920's and wa developing nicely until the ICC ruled against the associated FAK rates in the early 1930's. The closest thing I can think of is bulk containers of cement out of eastern PA hauled by DL&W in gons, but I don't recall this traffic at Binghamton. The 20' REA containers used a side-transfer system. I believe these small gantry cranes found use in more modern times adjusting shifted flatcar loads of lumber or pipe. Was the gantry at QD used for this purpose? The gantry was used for offloading LCL from flatcars or gondolas. - - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List http://EL-List.railfan.net/ To Unsubscribe: http://Lists.Railfan.net/erielackunsub.html ------------------------------
