I know the business lasted at least until the 1970's or so. By this time at least, they were producing horseradish. I remember seeing the remaining building(s) often from I-81. By this time it looked like one structure. I never noticed a siding or idle railcar there so I would guess the horseradish was trucked out. I would also hazard a guess that cabbage was also sold at area farmer's markets and possibly even area grocery stores. Walt Smith's Syracuse division manual does show a siding in Preble, but it's not labeled anything other than "N. Bound Spur Preble". This shows a revision date of 3/5/69 which is mostly before my memory. This could possibly be a spur for the cabbage farmers. I'm searching old newspaper archives now. If I can turn up more concrete facts I'll be sure to pass them on. Todd K.
