NJ TRANSIT PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE
PROPOSED CLOSING OF GREAT NOTCH RAIL STATION

The New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJ TRANSIT) operates rail passenger service on the Montclair-Boonton Line between Hackettstown and Hoboken and intermediate points.  Little Falls Township is currently served by three train stations – Little Falls Station, Great Notch Station and Montclair State University (MSU) Station – which are part of the Montclair-Boonton Line.  NJ TRANSIT proposes to close Great Notch Rail Station due to low ridership.  It is estimated that fewer than 20 customers per day use this station.  The MSU Station is located approximately one mile from the Great Notch Rail Station and space is available in the parking deck.  NJ TRANSIT will conduct a hearing to receive public comments on the proposed closing of Great Notch Rail Station.

A public hearing will be held as authorized by N.J.S.A. 27:25-8(d).  Written comments for the record may be sent to the Public Hearing Office-Great Notch Rail Station Comments, NJ TRANSIT, One Penn Plaza East, Newark, New Jersey 07105 or on NJ TRANSIT's website:

All comments must be received no later than midnight, September 3, 2008.

Individuals requesting sign language interpreters should contact the Public Hearing Office at 973-491-7453 by August 25, 2008.

Please be advised and assured that no final decisions have been made regarding the proposed station closing.  The public's views on this proposal as expressed at the hearings and through the written comment process will be presented to the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors prior to a final decision in this matter.

Declining ridership is probably related to the reduced number of trains that stop at Great Notch!  Five years ago, at least four trains in each direction stopped, with the most recent cut about a year ago.  The parking garage at Montclair State won't help those who are now able to walk to Great Notch station, and thus might not own a (second) car to drive to Montclair State.
