(erielack) puzzled by Lambert's Erie Dunmore caboose

Rik, I had an afterthought to my post with the caboose photo. It was really
one of empathy for you, of not wanting to burst anyone's bubble and yet we
all have our personal truths and facts that arise in response to a question.
I just checked my records and I bought my two Lambert Erie cabooses in 1980,
oblivious to any flaws and frankly oblivious to any measurements and any
window arrangement. They sure looked good at the time as I stashed them away
for my future Erie trains. They looked like what came at the end of any Erie
freight I saw in my early years. I went back to merrily laying track. Later,
Overland came out with two versions of the Dunmore caboose and I acquired a
bunch of these when they surfaced at good prices. They looked good to me and
I did not realize at the time just how much better they were than the
Lamberts. They still look good today.

The good news, Rik, is that with all the Morning Sun Books and ELHS
publications our visual acuity and criteria for what is a reasonably correct
model have jumped exponentially as the pictures and texts keep coming. The
bad news is that some of the old stuff in our boxes migrates to the other
side of the >>subjective<< toleration threshold. There is no easy answer to
this dilemma except to acknowledge that we live in the age of information
explosion and evolution. I am frankly terrified of learning much more about
freight cars because....what if I wind up with half my freight cars on the
other side of the tolerance fence? So I tastefullly weather, couple as
closely as possible, and outshop with Reboxx wheels, if necessary -- and
then just sit back and brainlessly enjoy the long passing freight train.
Please, don't anyone tell me those doors and car ends are wrong!! Please!!

Joe Braun
