Re: (erielack) Neat shot of EL run-through....

Paul, thanks for posting this photo. It's a real gem because pictures of EL
power on B&M are rare; this is the only one I've seen. EL power regularly
ventured onto the D&H but was usually turned at Mechanicville. The TOFC's
and time of day indicate this is most likely a late-running PB-100, due at E
Deerfield at 0530. The other coordinated e/b EL-D&H trains were TC-100,
scheduled through here in late afternoon, and ATC-4, which usually
terminated at M'ville. I think by this date, pure sets of U25B's were
uncommon. The photo provides clues about Hoosac tunnel's steam-era
configuration: double track and electrified operation (the poles at the
right once supported the catenary). Like several other tunnels in the
Northeast, this one was center-single-tracked to clear TOFC's. The tunnel
suffered a roof collapse in 1973. The B&M entered bankruptcy several months
prior to the date of the photo; the track is in poor condition.

A trio of EL U25Bs lead a freight out of Hoosac Tunnel on the B&M in Oct.
1970. I'm assuming a Dereco-era run-through off the D&H?
