Re: (erielack) Summer & Company (FY08-143)

The folder I mentioned earlier that Steamtown has on Summer & Company (DL&W
RR--Chief Engineers Files--1895--Track locations--Summer & Company--East
Buffalo, NY (1948 - 1954)) is a relatively small folder. It has 36
documents ranging from January 15, 1948, with the last on July 28, 1954.
The documents in 1954 seem to be unrelated to Summer & Company, and
mis-filed by the DL&W (there are a lot of mis-filed documents).

There are two other groups of documents that deal with Summer & Company in
this folder. One set of documents deals with a six month lease of
"covering 1000 feet of track No. 5 in westbound yard, East Buffalo."
Another document states the need for the track "for storing cars consigned
to them for rehabilitation for the U.S. Government."

The other correspondence in 1948 apparently deals with repair of a yard
owned by Summer & Co. in Cheektowaga by the DL&W, including material cost
and labor estimate. Not terribly exciting. There is no mention of cars
bought and sold, just the track lease and track repair.

Some of the correspondence is on Summer & Company letterhead, which lists
their General Offices in Columbus, OH, with Branch Offices in Buffalo, NY
and Cleveland, OH, with "plants" in Columbus, OH, Cleveland, OH,
Cheektowaga, NY and Lackawanna, NY.

Again, the folder is not earthshattering, but I would be happy to photocopy
its contents for any with particular interests.

Does anyone have any information on Summer & Company (location etc.)?
They were probably a "scrapper" operating in the 40s and 50s. They
bought old freight cars from DL&W among others.
