I did a search on "Portage" and "Bridge" on the archives at Steamtown and

 NS has been methodically replacing the tall bridges on the Nickel Plate
 between Cleveland and Buffalo over the past 10
 years, so I dont see how portage would be a problem. A 24 hr work window
 is enough to replace one bent and adjoining
 girder, allowing the replacement to happen under traffic over the course
 of several weeks.  Portage will get replaced, since
 NS has spent all the money on the other bridges already.  Fancy new
 bridges to the west that lead to a truncated line
 wouldn't make financial sense.

 These photos by Sig Case show the 2001 replacement of the NKP bridge at
 Westfield NY.

 Unless there is a some geological problem with the land that a layperson
 is unaware of, I dont see why portage
 could not be done in the same fashion, using the existing alignment.
 Absent the geological need for a different
 bridge design (i.e arch type), a new alignment just for the sake of one
 wouldnt buy NS much, as you would still
 have the trespasser problem.

 Also, dont forget that NS is posturing for state $$$.  The situation may
 not be as dire as the press reports.
