NJ Transit is holding a public hearing on Sept. 3 in Little Falls regarding its proposed permanent closure of the Great Notch station stop (on the Montclair-Boonton Line). As was recently discussed on the list, only a few trains still stop at the Notch. According to the NJT notice, only about 20 people still use the station each weekday.
Not exactly a big loss to the railfan community, as the old station and the big EL freights from the mid-70s are long gone. Today it's just another bus shelter that NJT can use somewhere else. But still, too bad; it was a nice location, it seemed different from the typical suburban NJ locale. Almost like a little station in the mountains of Pennsy or West Virginia. It could almost have fit in on the V&O or Allegheny Midland layouts, if you ignored the condos that built up around it in the 70s and 80s. Jim Gerofsky
